World Day of Prayer Celebration

On March 2, 2007, the Church as a universal or small c – catholic body will celebrate the World Day of Prayer.  It is a special time in the life of the church.  All over the world the Christian community will be in prayer.  We will be praying for peace, for a spiritual inner awakening, for those who cannot help themselves, and for those who are lost.  We have a special task in the times in which we live.  In many ways, the human community has seemingly ‘stepped out of its mind.’ We have fallen back into the philosophy of an ‘eye for an eye.’  We forget as one American reminded us, that the eye for an eye philosophy leaves everyone blind.

Often we forget that we who are Christian are part of a world saving event.  Our task as ambassadors transcends boundaries and nations.  We are called to reconcile men and women to God in Christ Jesus [2 Corinthians 5: 20].  We are not a community of consumers, who meet for the sake of feeling good and patting each other on the back.  We feel good because of what God continues to do in Christ Jesus, and for the ministry we are called to do for the whole world and not for just our tribe or clan.

We know that humanity is not always what God would have it to be.  But that does not excuse us from trying to be the best of what God would have us to be.  On that day of prayer, ‘Let go, and Let God.’  Pray for the whole world, and let your prayer for peace begin in you.
